Abstract

The term geoarchaeology is relatively new within the German-speaking countries, despite a long history in geoarchaeological research. In English-speaking countries, in contrast, the term geoarchaeology has been used for much longer. In this article, notwithstanding other possible perspectives, geoarchaeology will be discussed and defined from a geomorphological point of view approaching geoarchaeology as part of geomorphology. Nevertheless, geoarchaeology is claimed as a self-contained sub-discipline due to its explicit emphasis on the multidisciplinary role between geosciences and cultural sciences.
