Special Issue: Machine learning in Geography – challenges and perspectives

Hanna Meyer, Jörg Bendix, Alex Brenning, Thomas Brenner

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are becoming increasingly popular in the field of geography. The growing adoption of Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) is driven by its ability to uncover complex patterns, predict spatial phenomena, and provide deeper insights into geographical processes. GeoAI technologies are particularly appealing in modeling increasing amounts of often multimodal and multitemporal geospatial data. They offer new perspectives on tackling contemporary challenges across all fields of geography, making them promising for both research and practical applications in geography. Although GeoAI provides new perspectives for tackling current challenges in all areas of geography, its application is not without its challenges. Challenges include the adaptation of GeoAI to account for unique problems of geospatial analyses (e.g., spatial autocorrelation, modifiable areal unit problem), sampling bias, or interpretability of spatial models. These pose significant hurdles, which require further research and the definition of best practices.

The proposed Special Issue aims to provide comprehensive insights into the current status, ongoing developments, and possibilities in the field of GeoAI and its application across various domains of geography. This Special Issue will focus on conceptual developments as well as innovative applications of AI in answering geographical research questions, and explore how these advancements are revolutionizing different fields within geography. It seeks to compile pioneering research that advances our understanding of AI in geography and/or provides practical solutions for enhancing geographic research and applications through the application of innovative GeoAI methods.

We invite researchers to submit their original research articles, methodological contributions, review papers, and case studies that align with the themes outlined above. Contributions should provide novel insights, propose innovative methods, or present practical applications of AI in physical and human geography. We also welcome contributions that critically discuss the ethical implications of GeoAI, including the broader social implications of its application in geography. We look forward to valuable contributions to this exciting and evolving field.
